   The Catholic Speakers Series makes available distinguished Catholic scholars, writers and speakers in a comfortable, familiar local environment for Catholic adults and young adults who want to learn more about important and timely aspects of Catholic tradition, theology and spirituality.
   The format provides a stimulating combination of presentation and discussion with individuals who are recognized for their wisdom and insight.
   Speakers in this series are made possible in part by a grant from the Archbishop Kucera Center for Catholic Intellectual and Spiritual Life at Loras College and from various other co-operating partners.

“Clergy Sexual Abuse in the United States:
Catholic Church Responses and the Current Situation”

About the Program

While the Catholic Church has taken steps on the national and international level to confront the crisis of sexual abuse of minors by clerics, the president of the Center for Child Protection in Rome said recently that the general level of trust in the church is less than zero -- a fact which, he said, has devastated an institution built on trust and faith.
This presentation by an internationally respected expert will assess current efforts to address the clergy sexual abuse crisis and examine four aspects of the crisis as it has unfolded in the Catholic Church in the United States:
• the progression of abuse over time, considering four distinctive stages from the 1950s to the present;
• the responses of the Church and seminaries to overcome abuse relative to each period, including recent
   developments;
• what are emerging as significant approaches to prevent abuse in the future;
• current statistics which are necessary for discussion and clarification.

About the Speaker
    Sr. Katarina Schuth is a member of the Sisters of St. Francis of Rochester, Minnesota and Professor Emerita from The St. Paul Seminary School of Divinity at the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul. She earned an M.A. and Ph.D. in Cultural Geography from Syracuse University, and a Master of Theological Studies and License in Sacred Theology from Weston Jesuit School of Theology in Cambridge, Massachusetts. At St. Thomas Sr. Katarina served from 1991 to 2017 as an Endowed Professor for the Social Scientific Study of Religion; her primary interests were theological education, church leadership and the relationship between the church and American culture. Sr. Katarina worked for six years with the John Jay College of Criminal Justice to develop the 2011 report, “Causes and Context of Sexual Abuse” for the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops. Subsequently she developed more than a dozen power point presentations and commentaries for bishops, seminaries, dioceses, and parishes, which the USCCB has made available on its website. She has written five books on seminary education and well over 100 articles and book chapters. Her book Priestly Ministry in Multiple Parishes was published by Liturgical Press in 2006. Her most recent book, Seminary Formation--Recent History, Current Circumstances, and New Directions was published by Liturgical Press in 2016.
