If you are preparing to baptize an infant or young child, now is a good time to write them a letter explaining why you decided to have him or her baptized. This letter becomes a keepsake or momento which you will save for when your child is older and courious about their baptism.
Write this lettter as you would speak to your child---simply and personally, in your own words. Remember that some time, years from now, your child may ask you about their baptism and why he or she was baptized. Think of this letter as your answer to your child's question.
If you are a couple, do what works best for you in composing the letter. Some couples write the letter together; others delegate writing the letter to one or the other partner. In many cases, both partners write something separately.
Here are some suggestions on what to think about and how to begin what you want to say:
Dear __________, ...
...we chose to have you baptized because....
...baptism is important to us because....
...we wanted you to be a member of the Catholic church because....
...we believe this will make a difference in your life because....
...some day, when you look back on your baptism, we hope you will....
...we chose this name for you because....
When you have written the letter, sign and date it. Then put it in a safe place for keeping along with your child's Baptism Certificate, candle, photos, videos, and perhaps their Baptismal gown.
